Los Vaticanos was a kick-ass italian hardcore band from Rome that totally blew my mind when I discovered them on the “Crash Mandolino II” tape many years ago. They played some vicious hardcore flirting with grind and powerviolence with a very morbid atmosphere. Unfortunately, I didn’t find quite the same oppressive vibe on their LP, “Nerone 666″. And now that I’m thinking about it, the two tracks on “Crash Mandolino II” were even crazier than the demo. Shit, I really need to get these back. In the meantime and from hell’s entrails here’s Los Vaticanos demo tape.

Another great Pendu Disco night A.K.A “Horror Scores For The Dancefloor” which will include a performance by my new favorite band: Cult Of Youth.
Cult Of Youth is a young neo-folk band from Brooklyn with a sharp song-writing who just released a new EP and absolutely deserve your support. Most certainly the best thing I’ve heard in the neo-folk genre in years!!!

The delicate, minimalist, cold electro wave band Cosmetics and the luciferian troubadours of King Dude will also be there, right before the dance party set hosted by Brian K.
A pretty solid event I’m looking forward to…

Now, here’s a good one.

The Brooklyn Navy Yard contains some of the oldest buildings in New-York City.
The land was originally bought for 40 000 $ by U.S government in 1801.
140 years later, on the eve of World War II, the yard contained more than five miles of paved streets, four drydocks ranging in length from 326 to 700 feet, two steel shipways, and six pontoons and cylindrical floats for salvage work, barracks for marines, a power plant, a large radio station, and a railroad spur, as well as the expected foundries, machine shops, and warehouses…
In 1966, secretary of Defense Robert McNamara closes the Brooklyn Navy Yard along with over 90 other military bases and installations. At the time of its closing, the Brooklyn Navy Yard employs more than 9,000 workers and is the oldest continually active industrial plant in New York State.
In 1967, the City of New-York buys the Navy Yard for 24 000 000 $.
Today, most parts of this giant park have been renovated and are now used for various purposes such as storage, artists studios, cinema sets (the Steiner studios) and other businesses. But some parts remained empty, slowly decayed by time and rust.
I got the chance to take a walk around among these remnants of old forgotten times and bring you back the following pictures…

THE NAVY YARD HOSPITAL

Adjacent to the Navy Yard, the hospital was built in 1830.
By 1850, the Annex was a self-contained parcel of land, walled-in, with a gatehouse, a laboratory, and a cemetery. In 1864, the Surgeon’s Residence was constructed. During the Civil War, the hospital would supply over one third of the medicines used by Union troops, and the basement of the main hospital building would be used to confine and treat wounded Confederate prisoners. During this period, more space was needed, and needed quickly, and a wooden annex was added to the main hospital building. This allowed hundreds of additional beds in the facility; over 500 patients could be treated at once.
Since 1966, when the Navy Yard was decommissioned, and the hospital remained in abandonment. It was recently bought by the Steiner studios who purchased the complex in order to expand their studio space.
The hospital is now your perfect haunted mansion, drowned in silence and darkness and I had a blast walking through these empty corridors…

THE OFFICERS’ HOUSES

Now, here’s the heartbreaking part of the story: the Navy Yard also built between 1864 and 1901 ten officers houses called the “Admiral’s Row”.
These gorgeous houses have abandoned since 1966 and are now eaten by trees and trash until they will be either destroyed for a new supermarket or renovated for visiting purposes. The renovation costs would be up to 25 000 000 $ so of course the city want them destroyed.
The Admiral’s Row is now a federal property surrounded by a fence and barb wire and I was not equipped enough to get in there…

Escape From New-York

“I don’t give a fuck about your war… And I don’t give a fuck about your president…”, says Snake Plissken in his raspy low voice.
However he will, in a few hours, be parachuted on Manhattan island, which is now a maximum security prison and a no man’s land surrounded by a gigantic impenetrable wall. Plissken has 24 hours to rescue the president, captured by the duke of New-York, with the help of Harold, Brain and Cabby and leave the island that no one leaves… Yes, another post-apocalyptic flick from the early eighties, a Carpenter’s masterpiece with an amazing casting (Isaac Hayes and Lee Van Cleef in the same film, fuck yeah) and the most badass hero ever. I remember the VHS sleeve at my local video store made a huge impression on me when I was a kid.
So here’s a nice treat for you my friends, in praise of 80’s and the apocalypse, here’s the “Escape From New-York” soundtrack.

Once you go in, you can’t get out.

Please Kill Me

If rock n’ roll could only be represented by two books and not a single more, “Please Kill Me: The Uncensored History Of Punk Rock” would be one of them, the second one being, of course, “The Dirt” by Mötley Crüe. Everyone who said “The Lords Of Chaos” should go back watching Watain videos on Youtube and never come back here again). But right now we’re going to talk about this great anthology of punk music (in the widest sense) by Legs McNeil and Gillian McCain who basically put in a chronological order some interviews they did through the years with the most influential actors of the movement: musicians but also managers, artists, writers, club owners… “Oral History”, it says on the cover.
So therefore, and as opposed to most rock books, “Please Kill Me” has been written by the ones who did punk and not by some wanna-be musician journalists who are mainly responsible for the fact that almost everybody on this fucking planet think that punk was born in England in the seventies.
We start from New-York with The Velvet Underground, Andy Warhol, The Factory, Patti Smith, then Detroit with the MC5, Iggy Pop and The Stooges, go back to NYC with The New-York Dolls, (the most handsome) Richard Hell, The Ramones, the opening of CBGB, the first issue of “Punk Magazine”. We bump into David Bowie, Jim Morrisson, Bebe Buell, Malcolm McLaren, Sid Vicious shooting up in the bathroom with Dee Dee, hookers & drag-queens, poets & junkies. We read these street stories of a New-York that seems so long gone now and get this smelly, vivid, insane picture of the city wherein our heroes try to survive along with the rats and cockroaches and, if possible, put out a couple of records. These epic tales, that you could almost read to your people around a campfire, aren’t in any way the deeds of some heroes in shining armors: it’s dirty, mean, politically incorrect, full of drugs, sex and betrayals. It’s wild and nasty.
We laugh with them, cry with them, struggle with them, and close the book with the feeling that we shared with them one of the most amazing story ever told.
“Please Kill Me” is a must-read.

The Mayhem Archive Part III: Euronymous Letters

Welcome to the part III of our Mayhem Archive, a testimony of the early black-metal scene in Norway revolving around (the true) Mayhem.

This time, we bring you original letters written by Euronymous himself (the guitarist and leader of the band who got murdered by Varg Vikernes in 1993 for those who don’t know) who was an epistolary enthusiast. Euronymous was corresponding with a whole bunch of contacts all over the globe, spreading the word the old-school way. One of his current correspondent was Morgan A.K.A Evil from Marduk, a die-hard fan of the band at the time, but you’ll also find here letters written to a peruvian contact named Pocho Metallica (what a fucking sick name!!!) and last but not least the infamous letter announcing Dead’s death.
Of course there might be more Euronymous letters that can be found on the internet or even originals on e-bay and this is only a sample.

Last but not least, these letters were used with kind permission of Chagrynn from Death Row For Traitors which is the ultimate ressource about the life, work and death of Euronymous in order to keep his memory unstained by Vikernes shit storm.

What appears the most from these letters is that Mayhem was really damn broke and was mainly trying, like any other garage band, to survive, get their expenses paid and trade some records to keep the underground alive. Definitely punk and D.I.Y! Of course these letters are also enriched by the Mayhem folklore, they smell like blood, sweat and poison, and Euronymous his mainly responsible for the myth around his band (which by the way never survived his loss) but they show a different side of the norwegian horde.
I really enjoyed reading that stuff so I hope you will too! I mean, how couldn’t you enjoy the prose from a man who used to sign autographs saying: “May the blue bird of happiness never shit in your tea”!

5 days before his death, GG Allin showed up all high and fucked up on American TV, announcing his reign to come as the new messiah without omitting to add he will rape your children too. His confrontation with the dumb-ass audience and the other guests is absolutely thrilling, GG was a hell of a wounded animal and a great guy. We miss you GG!

I had the opportunity to work recently on a photo shoot at the Floyd Bennet Field in Brooklyn.
The Floyd Bennet Field was New-York city’s first municipal airport and became a national park service acquisition since its shut-down in 1971. Today the Floyd Bennet Field is ranged among the historical sites of the city. Some of its buildings have been converted in business concessions and a sport complex. A small portion of the former airfield is now also used by an environmental education program for gardening.
Fortunately for us, a few hangars haven’t been re-used yet, mostly for financial reasons, and offer an interesting sight of industrial decay.
I was really not expecting to find anything like that there so I’m glad I did. The only problem was that I had very little time to walk through this mess to really explore the complex (a custom building seems much more well preserved from the outside but I couldn’t get in) and, last but not least, I didn’t have my camera. These pictures were taken with my phone. Guerilla style.
Couldn’t help myself thinking how awesome it would be to set up a show in there…

Now, the bikes that you can see at the end and that we used for the shoot are the property of crazy-ass Neil A.K.A Mister Tinker. If you’re into old custom bikes you should definitely check his blog here. Yes, one of these babies was born in 1953…

Horror space electro disco rock with a low, evil, guttural voice conducted by Darth Vaders look-alikes.
Weird as fuck, totally funny and entertaining. This record is great.

Here’s a mix I played for the Live Alive opening at the Brachfeld-Gallery in Paris a few months ago. The exhibition consisted in a bunch of t-shirts portraying famous fashion designers the way our favorite bands were in the 80’s. As you already guessed it was a great success as the music was actually a million times better than the exhibition itself.
